DIVORCE LAW : Divorce Laws

Bakhro

Divorce Laws as with other laws can change from time to time. Therefore no matter which country or state you reside in, no matter how well you think you know the law, you should check that you are up to date with the latest divorce laws, in particular if you are planning to represent someone legally in this matter.

The divorce laws can also vary tremendously, not only from country to country but also from state to state. This includes not only the reasons why you may file for divorce initially, but also items such as child support, financial settlement rules and property. Just looking at the divorce laws of the state of Alabama compared with the state of Georgia shows differences. For example, in Alabama, there are three main grounds for filing for divorce whilst in Georgia there is only one.

Before reading this you may have been considering handling your own divorce, thinking that the divorce laws were simple and you wouldn’t need to go to the expense of hiring a lawyer. Now you may be having second thoughts. But if I’m being honest, if your divorce has the potential to be straightforward and amicable as both parties want it, then you may still want to consider handling your own case.

There are numerous kits and information packs available that explain the divorce laws applicable in your area in a simple, straightforward manner. As these kits tend to be a minimum financial outlay compared to the cost of hiring a professional, it may be something still to consider if you are reasonably smart and money is of an issue.

Bearing in mind what I said earlier, if you do decide to go ahead with the divorce and represent yourself, you should check that your kit contains up to date, accurate divorce law information that is applicable for your state. Otherwise, it is just a waste of time to buy such a kit or information pack.

So what with all the differences in the divorce laws, you can imagine that it is quite common for lawyers who have trained and specialized in the area of divorce, that they need to retrain if they move out of state or out of country. Something to bear in mind if you are thinking about a career in the area of divorce law. And if you’re considering using a specialist for your divorce, it might help explain why the fees are so high!
